Police have identified the suspect in a recent attack as 21-year-old Abdul Ballout, a German citizen of Lebanese descent. He is known to law enforcement and has a criminal history, including a previous sentence of one year and 10 months in prison, which was later commuted to parole.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that Ballout had been radicalized. Reports indicate that he is a supporter of the Islamic State group (IS) and attempted, unsuccessfully, to join the organization in the past. In May 2025, he tried to travel to Mauritania via Turkey but failed. He subsequently traveled to Lebanon, intending to reach Syria and join IS.
While in Lebanon, Ballout allegedly contacted individuals he believed to be IS members. He was arrested in July 2025 and spent three months in prison. After his release, he returned to Berlin in November 2025, where he was arrested at the airport and held in pre-trial detention until May 2026. He was ordered to participate in a de-radicalization program.
Authorities believe he is linked to a rented vehicle found abandoned in a park. Several people have been reported injured in the attack involving stabbing weapons.
