Breaking News: Tensions Rise Between Afghanistan and Pakistan
Kabul, Afghanistan – Recent airstrikes in Afghanistan’s Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar provinces have led to rising tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Taliban government claims the strikes targeted civilian homes, while Pakistan insists they were aimed at militant hideouts.
Casualties were reported in Mandokhail, a village in Paktika province. The Taliban has not confirmed specific numbers, and the BBC has not independently verified casualty figures from either government.
These attacks follow a deadly incident in Karachi, Pakistan, where three members of the Sindh Rangers were killed in a suicide attack. Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a splinter group of the Pakistan Taliban, claimed responsibility for that attack.
Both the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Jamaat-ul-Ahrar are banned in Pakistan and have faced international sanctions due to their involvement in past violence.
The two countries had previously agreed to a ceasefire last October after weeks of clashes, but this agreement has since collapsed. Recent months have seen intermittent border clashes and airstrikes resulting in numerous casualties on both sides.
