Breaking: US and Iran Agree to “Stand Down” After Recent Strikes, Ensuring Free Passage Through Strait of Hormuz

Breaking News: US and Iran Agree to Stand Down

The United States and Iran have agreed to “stand down” after recent strikes in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a US official. This decision follows multiple attacks in the region, with both nations accusing each other of violating a ceasefire.

The US official confirmed that vessels can now move freely through the waterway. Renewed talks aimed at ending the conflict will continue. Iran has not yet commented on this agreement.

On June 17, the US and Iran signed a 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for an “immediate and permanent termination of military operations.” Under this agreement, Iran committed to ensuring safe passage for commercial vessels for 60 days.

However, the ceasefire was threatened by renewed attacks. An Iranian projectile hit a cargo ship on Thursday, prompting US retaliatory strikes on Iranian targets. Iran then launched strikes on US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, which reportedly caused no casualties or damage.

The Strait of Hormuz is crucial for oil and gas shipments. Tensions remain high, as fighting continues between Israeli forces and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
