Breaking News: Deportation Proceedings Reinstated for Palestinian Student
The United States Board of Immigration Appeals has reinstated deportation proceedings against Palestinian student Mohsen Mahdawi. This decision follows a court filing from his lawyers.
In February, Immigration Judge Nina Froes had blocked the Trump administration’s efforts to deport Mahdawi, who is a student at Columbia University. He was arrested last year during pro-Palestinian protests. Froes ruled that the administration failed to provide sufficient evidence for deportation.
Last month, Judge Froes was dismissed by the Trump administration. The Board of Immigration Appeals has now overturned her decision.
In a statement, Mahdawi accused the Trump administration of using the immigration system to silence his advocacy for Palestinian rights. He expressed his commitment to continue his peaceful efforts for human dignity.
Mahdawi was detained for two weeks after his arrest during an interview with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He was not charged with a crime. His legal team stated that his arrest was based on a provision allowing deportation for individuals deemed to pose “adverse foreign policy consequences” for the U.S.
