Increased Guidance Needed for Jersey’s Childcare Funding Scheme, Says JCCT Head
The head of the Jersey Child Care Trust (JCCT) has called for enhanced guidance for parents navigating the government’s childcare funding scheme. This request comes in light of recent challenges faced by families attempting to reclaim funds from the initiative.
In February, the government announced that parents of children eligible for the scheme from January to August 2026 could apply for up to £4,180. Furthermore, those with children eligible for a full school year starting September 1, 2026, would be able to claim as much as £6,270.
Despite the potential benefits of the scheme, some families have encountered difficulties in processing their claims. Reports indicate that several parents have been informed that they submitted ‘invalid receipts’ for childcare expenses, leading to confusion and frustration.
Fiona Vacher, CEO of JCCT, acknowledged that as a pilot program, the initiative would likely reveal some issues. “We understand that there have been cases where parents submitted bills instead of receipts,” she explained. Vacher emphasized that the organization anticipated challenges and noted that the government is actively addressing these concerns.
To improve the experience for parents, Vacher suggested that the government could provide clearer instructions regarding the submission process. “A bit more information about how and what parents should submit would be beneficial,” she stated.
Deputy Catherine Curtis, the Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning, provided an update on the scheme’s progress. Since its inception, 537 applications have been approved for 409 families, resulting in £1.4 million disbursed to date. Curtis also mentioned that while no formal complaints have been logged, feedback from users is currently being analyzed to facilitate ongoing improvements to the program.
As the childcare funding scheme continues to evolve, the JCCT’s call for clearer guidance highlights the need for effective communication and support for parents. Ensuring that families can easily navigate the application process is essential for the success of this initiative, which aims to alleviate childcare costs and support working families in Jersey.
