Breaking News: Laos Investigates Deaths Linked to Contaminated Alcohol
Laos authorities have stated they cannot determine the cause or blame for the deaths of six individuals linked to methanol-tainted alcohol. The victims include a Briton, two Australians, two Danish citizens, and an American, who died in November 2024 after a night out in Vang Vieng.
The Laos Ministry of Public Security reported that no autopsies were performed, which prevents them from establishing a clear cause of death. They noted that excessive levels of methanol were found in vodka produced by a local distillery. The distillery owner faces charges for selling harmful food products and operating illegally, but not for the deaths.
The Australian government expressed frustration over the lack of serious charges. Australia’s foreign ministry summoned the Laos ambassador in Canberra for discussions.
Earlier this year, 10 people associated with the hostel where the victims stayed were charged with destroying evidence. The British government has since launched a campaign warning tourists about the risks of methanol poisoning, which can have severe health effects.
