Breaking News: Protests Erupt in Houston Over ICE Shooting
Protests took place in Houston on Wednesday following the shooting of a man named Salgado by ICE agents. Four Democratic Congress members have called for an independent investigation into his death.
In a letter to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Representatives Sylvia Garcia, Al Green, Lizzie Fletcher, and Christian Menefee expressed concerns about the use of deadly force by ICE agents. They referenced previous cases where U.S. citizens were killed by federal agents in Minneapolis earlier this year.
The Congress members criticized DHS and ICE for their statement regarding Salgado’s shooting. They claimed it reiterated familiar narratives, stating the shooting resulted from an attempted arrest and self-defense.
In response to the incident, the Mexican government announced plans to file criminal complaints in the U.S. regarding the deaths of its citizens in U.S. custody. Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco reported that 14 Mexicans died while in ICE custody, with three additional deaths occurring during ICE operations. Velasco stated that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum instructed him to pursue these complaints as criminal investigations.
