Breaking News: Super Typhoon Approaches Northern Mariana Islands and Guam
Residents in the Northern Mariana Islands are moving to emergency shelters as a super typhoon approaches. Rota, the southernmost inhabited island, is expected to experience a direct hit.
The mayor’s office has issued an advisory for residents to prepare for destructive winds. Officials warn that conditions will deteriorate quickly, making it unsafe to be outside.
The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that winds are not expected to drop below typhoon force until early afternoon on Monday. Winds will remain above tropical storm force until after midnight.
In Guam, a popular tourist destination with a population of about 170,000, five evacuation centers have been opened in schools. These centers can accommodate around 1,700 people and are mainly for vulnerable individuals.
As of 1:00 PM local time on Sunday, one evacuation site in Guam has reached full capacity, and residents are being redirected to other locations. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise residents to stay indoors.
