Tuchel Announces Bold England World Cup Squad, Excluding Foden and Alexander-Arnold, with Toney’s Inclusion as a Surprise

England’s 2026 World Cup Squad Announced: Notable Exclusions and Surprising Selections

Published on May 22, 2026

In a highly anticipated announcement, England’s head coach Thomas Tuchel revealed the squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. The selection process has sparked considerable discussion, particularly due to the exclusion of several high-profile players, including Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. In contrast, the inclusion of Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney has taken many by surprise.

Tuchel, who previously led Chelsea to a Champions League victory, has been tasked with guiding the Three Lions to their first major international trophy in over six decades. His decision-making has been met with scrutiny, especially as England gears up for a challenging tournament in the United States.

Foden and Palmer, both of whom were instrumental in England’s journey to the Euro 2024 final, have been omitted from the squad due to underwhelming performances for their respective clubs this season. Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin also missed out, despite being among the top English scorers in the Premier League.

Veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson, who previously captained Liverpool, has secured a place in the squad, displacing Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton. Tuchel acknowledged the difficulty of informing players about their exclusion, stating, “It was difficult, sometimes painfully difficult. I wanted to show appreciation and respect for what they have done.”

The coach expressed his eagerness to embark on the World Cup journey, highlighting the excitement of the players selected. “Now I’m feeling in between relieved and excited and ready to go,” Tuchel remarked.

Among the notable reactions, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire expressed his shock at being left out, stating he felt prepared to contribute significantly to the team. His teammate, Luke Shaw, also found himself excluded from the squad.

Tuchel’s decision to include John Stones, despite his limited playing time at Manchester City due to injuries, suggests a willingness to take calculated risks. Meanwhile, Toney, who made a brief impact during the Euros two years ago, has seen limited international play since his move to Saudi Arabia in 2024.

England’s World Cup campaign is set to commence against Croatia in Dallas on June 17, followed by matches against Ghana on June 23 and Panama on June 27.
