Breaking News: US Charges Raúl Castro with Conspiracy
Havana, Cuba – The United States has charged former Cuban leader Raúl Castro with conspiracy to kill US nationals and other crimes. The charges were announced on Wednesday.
The case involves the downing of two planes belonging to the Cuban-American group Brothers to the Rescue in 1996. Four people were killed in the incident, including three Americans.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel responded to the charges, calling them “a political manoeuvre, devoid of any legal foundation.”
Raúl Castro, who is nearly 95 years old, is the brother of the late Fidel Castro. He is recognized on the island as the last surviving leader of the Cuban Revolution.
Details about the next steps in the legal process have not yet been released.
