Breaking News: Shark Attack Victim Wakes from Coma
A woman bitten by a shark over a week ago at Coogee Beach in Sydney has briefly woken from an induced coma. Leah Stewart, 34, was attacked on June 13, suffering severe injuries and blood loss.
Stewart was in critical condition and underwent multiple surgeries, including an amputation of her arm. On Tuesday, her brother reported that doctors reduced her medication, allowing her to wake up momentarily. During this time, she expressed love for her mother and partner and inquired about her daughter.
Her brother, Joshua Stewart, described her brief awakening as a “miracle” and a positive step in her recovery. He noted that Leah remains in intensive care and has undergone five surgeries in the past week, with more planned.
Leah, a teacher, was swimming close to shore when the attack occurred. There has been an increase in shark attacks in Australia this year, including several fatalities.
